When we’ve had a little bit too much fun in the sun, the end of the day can find us rubbing sore shoulders and hunting down the after-sun lotion. Sunburn is dehydrating and damaging for the skin — but more than that, it can be very painful. Fortunately, plants have a solution to ease the discomfort. Aloe vera, or aloe barbadensis, will cool and hydrate the skin, so you can put your t-shirt on and carry a bag without wincing. Discover our guide for making after-sun gel from this caring, helpful plant.
MAKE OR BUY?
You could buy an after-sun gel from the pharmacy with extract of aloe vera plant. Or, for a more powerful solution, you can make the cooling, moisturizing gel yourself.
Remove a large leaf from your aloe vera plant, cut it in half and scoop the transparent gel out of the inside with a spoon. This can be spread immediately to the places where you have been burned. You’ll feel the cooling effects, and your skin will rehydrate more quickly. Then you’ll be able to get back in the sun. Don’t forget to wear suncream with a strong SPF factor — recently sunburnt skin will be extra sensitive.
