Amaryllis as a cut flower: a shining star in the house

If you like cut flowers, you will automatically end up with the amaryllis in the period before and after the end-of-year holidays. This beautiful flower, available in a range of colors, brings warmth and atmosphere to your home during the cold months. Let's take a closer look at the charm of the amaryllis as a cut flower.

Available in many colors

The amaryllis is available from September to March and comes in various colors and varieties. The velvety petals come in white, red, yellow, pink, (salmon) pink, purple, orange and bicolor. With four to six impressive flowers per stem, the amaryllis is a real eye-catcher. Because of the lack of leaves, she is also called 'Naked Lady' in the United States.

Care and Maintenance

To enjoy the Amaryllis as a cut flower to the fullest, follow these care tips:

✓ Cut the stems at an angle and place them in clean water.

✓ Use a tall vase, as the flowers are heavy.

✓ Remove wilted flowers to keep the rest fresh.

✓ Ensure there is enough space, as the flowers grow quickly.

✓ Enjoy the flowers for at least 10 days, and up to 14 days depending on room temperature.

Symbolism of Amaryllis

The amaryllis symbolizes pride and enchanting beauty. With her imposing appearance, she expresses a sense of admiration, appreciation and affection. Truly a flower to conquer hearts with! This can be done from the kitchen table in a bouquet, but also works perfectly if you give away a beautiful bouquet to a loved one.

Origin of Amaryllis

The amaryllis as we know it is native to South and Central America and the Caribbean. Actually, it is not amaryllis, because what we call amaryllis is actually called Hippeastrum. This radiant flower is a descendant of the daffodil family and grows from a bulb. The name Hippeastrum comes from Greek and literally means 'knight's star', referring to the star-shaped petals. 'Hippeus' means knight and 'astron' means star.

The shining star in the house

The amaryllis is often called the star of the holiday season and is a true favorite in December. However, this elegant flower with its long stems and striking blooms also fits perfectly in early spring. It brings warmth, atmosphere, and a touch of magic to your home, whether during the holidays or in the first weeks of spring. With proper care, you can enjoy its beauty for weeks. Let the amaryllis shine in your home and experience its unique charm and symbolism.
