- Flower of the month: Helleborus
Helleborus as a cut flower
With its unique calyx, the Helleborus cut flower adds a special accent to bouquets and arrangements. Usually considered a winter flower, Helleborus is now available throughout the year, making it a versatile choice for florists and arrangers.
Developments in growing Helleborus as a cut flower are rapid, and it is interesting to see how this flower is growing in popularity. The flower form of Helleborus is appreciated for the exclusive look it adds to contemporary bouquets.
Originating from calcareous regions such as the Alps and Apennines, the Helleborus blooms in the Netherlands from January to April, with a supply starting a little earlier. This flower is already popular during the christmas period, as it is one of the few plants that blooms while most other plants are still dormant.
The bright white colour of the Helleborus adds an elegant touch to bouquets. Its shelf life is about 4 weeks and retains its ornamental value even if the flowers slowly turn to green in cooler temperatures.
Care tips for the Helleborus
- Place the stems of the Helleborus in fresh, cold water. Feeding is not necessary.
- Change the water in the vase once a week.
- Make sure the Helleborus is always in the water.
- In case of discolouration on the underside of the stems, cut them at an angle again and replace the water.
In short, the Helleborus cut flower is a wonderful choice available all year round, and its unique characteristics make it a valuable addition to various floral creations.
