Flower of the Month: Hydrangea
May, 2025
In May, the spotlight is on the Hydrangea – a flower renowned for its stunning presence, wide color range, and rich symbolism. This cut flower has been a global favorite among florists for many years.
Symbolism of Beauty and Gratitude
The hydrangea symbolizes grace, abundance, and heartfelt emotions. Its large, globe-shaped flower head is made up of numerous small petals, creating a lush and luxurious appearance. It’s perfect for statement bouquets, ceremonial arrangements, or as a meaningful gift.
Colors and Flower Shapes
Cut hydrangeas come in a wide array of shades: white, pink, blue, purple, and green – often with special color gradients or contrasting edges. Several flower forms are available:
- Mophead hydrangeas
- Lacecap hydrangeas
- Panicle hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata)
This variety makes the hydrangea suitable for diverse styles – from sleek modern to romantic and natural.

The Unique Color-Change Process
One of hydrangea’s most unique features is its ability to change color during the season – for example, from pink to green with warm undertones.
This results in two distinct types:
- Fresh hydrangeas: bright, vibrant tones (March – September)
- Classic hydrangeas: matured, firm, and long-lasting (June – November)
Growers determine the harvest time, which defines the color phase in which the flower is delivered.
Origin and History
Hydrangeas originate from Southeast Asia but also grow in the Americas. The name is derived from Greek: ‘hydro’ (water) and ‘angeion’ (vessel). The popular name "hortensia" was introduced in 1771 by French botanist Philibert Commerson.
In Europe, hydrangeas became known in the 18th century, although fossil records show they date back millions of years.
Versatile in Use
Cut hydrangeas are ideal for professional floral design. With stem lengths ranging from 30 to over 80 cm, they suit both compact bouquets and large-scale arrangements. Their sturdy stems and voluminous blooms make them easy to work with and instantly impactful. Availability: Mainly between May and November. Limited supply from greenhouse production during winter months.
Care tips
To maximize vase life:
Do's ✓ | Don'ts ✗ |
---|---|
✓ Cut at an angle with a sharp knife ✓ Use warm water (40-50°C) ✓ Add cut flower food or chlorine to increase longevity. ✓ Use a glass vase. ✓ Refresh the water regularly. |
✗ Use cold water ✗ Use metal or dirty vases. ✗ Place in direct sunlight or drafts. ✗ Put on under floor heating. |
A wilted hydrangea can often recover by recutting the stem and placing it in warm water. If the flower stops absorbing water, let it dry naturally.
Drying Classic Hydrangeas
Classic hydrangeas retain their shape and color well, making them perfect for dried arrangements and sustainable interior styling. Simply remove the leaves and place the stem in a dry vase without water.
