Flower of the Month: Ranunculus
March, 2025The ranunculus belongs to the extensive plant family Ranunculaceae, which also includes species such as Aconitum, Delphinium and peonies. Originally, the ranunculus comes from Central Asia. Through various detours, the flower eventually found its way to Europe, where it got its official name: Ranunculus. This is the Latin word for 'frog' – a fitting name, as the ranunculus is often found in the wild in marshy areas.
Symbolism of the ranunculus
The ranunculus symbolizes charm. In Victorian times, a bunch of ranunculus bore the message: 'I think you are rich in attractions'.
The ranunculus is available in a wide range of colors, including white, yellow, orange, pink, red and purple, and has several types:
Ranunculus Aazur
These medium-sized flowers are available in both solid and bi-coloured varieties. The colors range from white and cream to vibrant hues such as yellow, orange, and pink. They are particularly suitable for colourful bouquets.
Ranunculus Elegance
Similar to the Aazur series and available in a wide range of colors. A popular variety is the 'Cappuccino', which is characterized by a combination of cream and pink tones.
Ranunculus Pon Pon
This special ranunculus species has double flowers with a green core. Each flower within a bunch of Pon Pon ranunculus is unique, which creates a playful and dynamic effect. Well-known variants include 'Malva' and 'Hermione'.
Ranunculus Success (Cloony)
Ranunculus Success is a specific variety within the ranunculus species, known for its extra-large, full flowers and rich colours. What sets this variety apart from other Ranunculus varieties is its improved durability and longer flowering time. The flowers have a firmer structure, making them less likely to wilt, and are often more resistant to weather conditions such as rain.
Ranunculus Butterfly
The only spray ranunculus on the market. With up to 12 flowers per stem and a subtle sheen on the waxy petals, this variety offers a sophisticated look and a long shelf life.
Available all year round
Although the Ranunculus is often associated with spring, Ranunculus is available almost all year round thanks to its worldwide cultivation – from the Netherlands and Germany to Kenya and Ecuador. This way, everyone can enjoy this elegant and versatile flower at any time.
