Plant of the month: Cymbidium
February 2025

The floral splendor of the Cymbidium plant

The orchid family is huge, and this includes the special Cymbidium, which is best known for its flowers that are often used by florists. However, if you want to enjoy this beautiful flower even longer, then purchasing a Cymbidium plant is highly recommended. Within the Cymbidium species, we distinguish minis, large-flowered and Cascade species. In this blog, we focus on the Cascade species.

The Cascade Cymbidium is a special and popular variety of the Cymbidium orchid, and LZ Orchidee is the only grower of this species in Europe. In their 6000 square meter greenhouse in the Westland region, different types of Cascade Cymbidium grow. From October to March, when the orchids are in bloom, the greenhouse turns into a sea of colors.

Origin and characteristics
The botanical parents of the Cascade Cymbidium grow in dead trees and on rock walls at an altitude of 1500 to 2200 meters in Taiwan, Vietnam and China. Here the flowers do not have to protrude above the leaves, so they hang. This is what makes the Cascade Cymbidium so special and loved. This hardy plant thrives in colder conditions, which makes it particularly suitable for the northern climate.

Care tips

Water and Humidity
Unlike most other orchids, the Cymbidium needs more water and needs to be treated like other green houseplants. The soil should be moist, but the roots should never be in a puddle of water.

Placement
Place the Cymbidium in a bright spot in the room or orangery. The ideal temperature is between 13 and 20 degrees Celsius. Although the temperature in the living room may be higher, the plant will lose its flowers more quickly at higher temperatures. At 13 degrees, the plant can flower for up to 10 weeks, while at 23 degrees, the flowering period will not be more than 3 weeks. Avoid placing the plant above a heater or in a hot place.

Bloom
The natural flowering of the Cascade Cymbidium takes place once a year. To achieve this, there are some essential rules to follow:

  1. If the plant has lost its flowers, find a cooler spot in the house with plenty of light and water less. The plant can also be placed outside, but must be brought back inside in case of frost.

  2. After 12 weeks, the plant should be moved to a warmer place and given enough water as before. Fertilizer can be added regularly.

  3. If possible, place the plant outside in the spring and summer. Avoid direct sunlight, but choose a spot with sufficient light. Keep the soil moist. You can also choose to put the plant in the ground with pot and all, so that the soil does not dry out.

  4. When the outside temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius in the fall, bring the plant back inside.

With patience and good care, the Cascade Cymbidium will become more beautiful every year.
