Flower of the Month: Calla

April, 2025

The Calla, or Zantedeschia, has been named flower of the month of April. And rightly so: this elegant flower combines style, strength and versatility in a way that suits the fresh new season. For florists and wholesalers, this is the time to put the Calla in the spotlight. With its modern shape and rich color palette, it is a valuable addition to any range.

Elegance in its purest form

The Calla is a flower with charisma. Her unique funnel shape – a smooth bract that gracefully folds around the spike – makes her a favorite for both minimalist bouquets and luxurious arrangements. It is available in numerous colours: white, soft pink, yellow, purple, orange, green, black and even two-tone variants. So there is a suitable Calla for every style and customer wish.

Symbolism and emotion

White Callas symbolize purity and elegance and are widely used in bridal work and funeral arrangements. Other colors evoke other emotions: pink stands for appreciation, purple for mystery and yellow for cheerfulness. In ancient times, the flower was already seen as a sign of festivity – its shape is reminiscent of a chalice to celebrate life.

Origin and cultivation

The Calla is native to South Africa and grows naturally in humid areas with alternating wet and dry seasons. This makes it not only particularly resilient, but also ideal for cultivation in a wide range of climates. In the Netherlands, the Calla is grown at a high level, including by specialized growers such as Future Flowers.

A variety that deserves extra attention this season is Zazu, a soft pink Calla with sturdy stems and a refined look. This cultivar from Future Flowers is ideally suited for spring – and forms a wonderful basis for both romantic bridal bouquets and fresh spring arrangements.

Care tips for maximum shelf life

The Calla stays beautiful in the vase for an average of 7 to 10 days. For best results:

  • Cut stems diagonally upon receipt
  • Use a clean vase with fresh water and cut flower food
  • Change the water regularly and remove any slimy stems
  • Keep them away from heat, sunlight, and fruits (because of ethylene gas)

Applications in flower arrangements

Callas fit into any type of design. But what makes a Calla unique is that the stem is both sturdy and flexible. By forming the stem in a circle, you can tie them up very gracefully.
