Flower of the month: Cymbidium

Colors and shapes

The Cymbidium is instantly recognizable by its long flower stem and rich multi-flower spike. The flowers come in a wide range of colors: red, purple, pink, orange, yellow, green and even two-tone varieties.

Each flower has a distinctive hollow, arching lip that resembles a small boat. Not coincidentally, as the name Cymbidium comes from the Greek word "kymbos," which literally means boat.

Different shapes exist within the species. Some varieties have round petals, while others are slightly more pointed and elegantly shaped. This diversity makes the Cymbidium a versatile flower that suits almost any style or occasion.

What often makes orchids so special is their minimalist elegance. The Cymbidium takes this one step further. Even a single branch in a vase can make a powerful and luxurious statement.

In addition, the Cymbidium is surprisingly hardy. In mild room temperatures, this flower can remain beautiful for an exceptionally long time. Some varieties even have a vase life of three weeks or longer.

Symbolism

In China, the Cymbidium is traditionally given as a gift between friends. This is because the flower symbolizes respect, appreciation and genuine friendship. This makes the Cymbidium not only visually impressive, but also meaningful.

Origin

When you think of orchids you quickly think of tropical rainforests, but the Cymbidium is actually a true mountain dweller. This orchid grows naturally on the southern slopes of the Himalayan Mountains.

There it survives on rocky, nutrient-poor soils, with cold nights and bright sunlight. Despite these challenging conditions, the Cymbidium manages to produce its mysterious and elegant flowers time and again.

A flower with a luxurious appearance and the character of a true survivor.
