Sustainability

Florca, part of Dutch Flower Group (DFG), is committed to a sustainable future for the floriculture industry.

We translate this into three focal points:

1. Sustainable procurement

We see the sustainable sourcing of our products as an important part of our business strategy. From DFG, Florca is involved in the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative which monitors whether the production and trade of the product is done in a responsible manner. To demonstrate this, a grower must obtain sustainability certificates. If these are achieved, there is sustainable or certified sourcing.

As part of the FSI Accelerator Group (along with the other DFG companies, FM Group, Floral Trade Group and Royal Lemkes), the following roadmap is being followed for sustainable procurement:

  1. From 1/1/2026, all plants will be 100% FSI-compliant

  2. From 1/1/2026 the product groups flowers rose and chrysanthemum will be 100% FSI compliant

  3. From 1/6/2026, the tulip product group will be 100% FSI-compliant

  4. From 1/1/2027 the above companies will phase in 100% of their own purchasing according to the certifications in the FSI basket of standards. In doing so, they will use the learning curves and processes of the Rose, Chrysanthemum and Tulip product groups.

  5. In addition, these companies will actively work to ensure that even more trading companies and KOA customers will switch their purchasing to the requirements of FSI compliant certification.

In this way, we take responsibility for the products we trade with the goal of making a positive contribution to both the entire chain and the industry.

Since 2021, Florca has a vacuum cooler that cools the flowers back from room temperature to about 4 degrees within 25 minutes. This gives the cold chain a cold start and significantly extends the vase life of the flowers.

The cooling energy released from this process will be used in the central heat recovery (WTW) system, which will heat all buildings on Jupiter and Venus at Trade Park Westland. This further reduces the use of natural gas and we do our bit for the environment.

We believe that the relationship with growers is the basis for our business. By being in daily contact, we can guarantee the best quality of our product. Together with our growers, we are building a sustainable future for the floriculture industry by discussing the challenges of sustainability, among other things. We strengthen the relationship by visiting growers and organizing supplier meetings to discuss market developments.

2. Sustainable operations

Florca strives to ensure that its internal processes are designed as sustainably as possible so that this has minimal impact on the environment. For example, we use 100% green electricity in our premises. By switching to sustainable energy sources, we reduce our CO2 emissions significantly. In addition, we contribute to a cleaner future by separating and recycling our waste streams as much as possible.

3. Vital organization

Florca is proud of its young and ambitious team with Westland mentality. Within our company we strive for a sustainable commitment of our employees in which the well-being of our employees is central. We are proud of our healthy workplace within an inspiring working environment. The range of courses and training offers good development and advancement opportunities within the company. But above all, we find pleasure in work the most important thing. Various activities are organized throughout the year, aimed at both team building and sports. In addition, free fruit is provided and there is a bicycle plan for purchasing an electric bicycle through the company.

These three focal points are supported by DFG's sustainability strategy called IMPACT30. With this strategy, DFG companies are committed to making a positive environmental and social impact with all activities to make our businesses and chains within the floriculture sector even more sustainable.

We do this by focusing on 4 pillars:

  1. Acting responsibly;

  2. Lowering carbon footprint;

  3. Protecting the planet;

  4. Well-being of our people
