Discover the splendour of winter flowers
Top 10 selected by Ron

Winter is a period of calm in nature. Nevertheless, there are some flowers and plants that actually love the cold period. We love making it cosy inside, with typical winter greenery products coming in handy. We have carefully selected the 10 most beautiful flowers and plants that look wonderful during the winter period.

Bulb products: An explosion of colours
Flowers that really belong in winter/spring are bulbous products, they are the icons of the winter months and spring.  The special thing about bulbous plants is that you can store bulbs for months in cold, dry and dark condititons. Only when a little warmth, water and sunlight reach the bulb, it grows into beautiful flower stalks within a few weeks. By applying this technique in the greenhouse, products like the tulip are available all year round. But because bulb products from nature only bloom when the sun shows up again after the cold winter months, flowers like the tulip and hyacinth are still associated with spring and a new beginning.

1.Tulip single 'Antartica'
Among bulbous products, the tulip stands out as one of the most famous flowers. Tulips are not only beautiful; they represent love, passion and the idea of starting again. Pictured is Tulip single 'Antartica', the number one white cut tulip, perfect for vases and bouquets. This snow-white triumph tulip blooms mid-season and is a welcome addition to flower beds, borders and in arrangements.

2.Hyacinth
The hyacinth adorns itself with a beautiful, full flower stem consisting of numerous small flowers arranged closely together. This versatile flower flaunts a variety of colours, ranging from white and pink to purple and blue. Symbolically, the hyacinth represents peace, devotion, beauty, power and pride, thus the flower carries profound meaning.

3.Daffodil
The striking yellow flower of the daffodil can be found both as a cut flower and in pots. Do you see daffodils? Then you know it's (almost) spring. With its bright colour, this cheerful flower announces spring and symbolises self-love, vanity and unrequited love.

4.Muscari
Muscari, better known as the grape hyacinth, adds an enchanting element to both gardens and bouquets. With its unique flower shape and vibrant colours, Muscari is a popular choice for lovers of sophisticated-looking flowers. The Muscari plant is frequently used in spring arrangements, bringing a touch of spring splendour into the home.

5.Iris
Best known for its many beautiful shades of blue, the iris is a unique choice among cut flowers. Whether you like white, yellow, purple or bicoloured irises, the flower fully unfolds its three petals during flowering. As a cut flower, the Iris shines in bouquets, and its meaning, 'I have a message for you', makes it perfect for special messages. On a table or sideboard, she is a long-lasting eye-catcher.

6.Hippeastrum Galaxy 'Challenger' (Amaryllis)
Hippeastrum, also known as Amaryllis, is a striking flower. The flower stems can vary in length from 45 cm to 90 cm. This considerable length makes the Hippeastrum ideal as a cut flower for large-scale and luxurious arrangements. Nevertheless, the Amaryllis also shines in its simplicity. Once the flower reaches full bloom after a few days, a true explosion of floral splendour unfolds.

Versatility of flowers and plants also in winter
Winter is also the scene for several other flowers and plants. For instance, there are perennials that are hardy and produce flowers precisely when it is cold. Yet there are also typical cut flowers that are only available in the cold months of the year.

7.Helleborus 'Queens White'
Helleborus, often found in winter gardens, has gained popularity as a cut flower these days. Its delicate white and sometimes red flowers add charm to both indoor and outdoor environments. Helleborus 'Queens White' is a wonderful choice for weddings or special occasions, with its graceful and snowy white petals.

8.Cymbidium 'mrs Sugar Lee'
Available from October to May, the Cymbidium is known as a true winter product on the market. These flowers thrive in cooler climates and require only minimal greenhouse heating. The greenhouse is only heated when temperatures drop below freezing, making the Cymbidium a sustainable choice for florists. The Cymbidium 'mrs Sugar Lee' has bright white petals with bright pink spots in the centre, it is a beautiful flower for bridal bouquets and luxury arrangements, among others.

9.Skimmia Japonica 'Rubella'
Recognisable by its red berry-like flowers, the flowering of the evergreen Skimmia begins in spring. As the season progresses, the Skimmia takes on a deep dark red colour. Although the Skimmia is excellent as an outdoor plant, it is also loved as a cut flower. Once the flowers are full of colour, the branches of the Skimmia are cutoff for use in winter arrangements.

10.Brassica 'Crane King'
Brassica, a robust and very long-lasting flower with a distinctive look, has become hugely popular in recent years. This impressive relative of common brassicas such as cauliflower and Brussels sprouts is technically not a flower but a plant grown on long stems. Available in white, red, pink, purple or bicoloured, Brassica adds a touch of grandeur to any floral arrangement. Brassica 'Crane King' is one such two-coloured Brassica, this flower is beautifully constructed and goes from white to purple in the core of the flower.
