The Calathea is distinguished by its decorative leaves. Each species has its own pattern, ranging from fine stripes and wavy lines to striking color contrasts. The upper side of the leaf is often green with unique markings, while the underside frequently has a purple or burgundy hue.

What makes this plant especially unique is its daily rhythm. During the day, the leaves unfurl to capture as much light as possible. As evening approaches, they close again. This is why the Calathea is also known as the “living plant.”

The Calathea is native to the rainforests of South America. There, it grows beneath the canopy of large trees, where the light is filtered and humidity is high.

This natural environment explains why the plant prefers a spot with indirect light and a constant temperature.
